Tokyo’s Best Kept Secret Tour: Jindaiji

Tour Description

Join me on a virtual tour to one of Tokyo’s hidden gems, the Jindaiji temple and its charming little township. Jindaiji is the second oldest temple in Tokyo and while it is well known to us, locals not many foreign tourists see it because of its location on the outskirts of the city. Through this virtual tour you have the chance to see this enchanting place and experience the charm of ‘old Japan’ in an authentic way.

Jindaiji’s 1,300 years long history is entwined with legends and stories of miracles. The temple has an ageless, mystical vibe enhanced by the old trees and dark green ponds on its grounds. Jindaiji’s township is a unique place too: with its traditional teahouses and artisan market it will give you an unforgettable experience of what life in old Edo (Tokyo’s old name) was like.

I love answering questions, so please do not hesitate to ask anything you want to know as we go. And, if you want to take photos from the experience let me know and I will hold the camera on the view you like for you to take a screen shot.

What you will see:

  • The temple grounds, beautiful in every season but especially charming in the spring
  • The shrines of the Water God and the Gods Ebisu and Daikoku, bringers of good luck and abundance
  • The old temple buildings, the ancient temple bell and statues of Buddhas and bodhisattvas weathered by time.
  • Tap into the temple’s magic – purchase an Ema votive tablet to leave at the temple with a wish you want to come true.
  • Have your own omikuji fortune slip read to you. You didn’t like it? No problem – we will tie it by the holly tree and ask the gods to take the bad luck away.
  • Browse the handmade items at the artisan market. Purchasing of these items can be arranged
  • Jindaiji’s famous soba noodles traditional restaurants and teahouse
  • Visit the Yokai Cafe with its pictures of magical beings painted on the walls for a taste of local folklore.
